Do you see yourself as an expert in your area of business? Is there anyone else who knows as much as you about what you do in your geographical area?

Maybe there is, but I will bet they haven't written a book.

I believe everyone has a book to write. Given your uinque experiences, training, and insights, you alone can give your special view on your area of expertise.

Why should you write a book now? It's simple, a book is content, and content is the key to demonstrating your knowlege and abilities when marketing online or making personal connections with people.

In my book, I teach local business owners how to save money on marketing by using the internet

Here are 5 reasons to write a book to help your business.

1. It is now easier than ever to write a book.

If you have a program like Word, then you can write a book. Create a simple outline, write a fixed number of tips, or write a manifesto. The big idea here is that you can write down your fascinating ideas and share them with the world for free.

Title it with what you do (example: Buying Real Estate in Chicago, Choosing The Right Dog Kennel, How To Buy A High End Home Theater System, How To Hire A Plumber and Not Get Ripped Off). Turn it into a pdf file and upload it to your website.

2. Writing a book gives you instant credibility.

People stop in their tracks when they hear you have written a book. When you say the words "I am an author," it opens a door to talk about what you do.

3. Sell it or give it away.

I sell my book as an E-book on Amazon and Google E-books. There are literally thousands of places to post your book. I have used my keywords in the description box and people find it in searches. I also give it away to anyone who joins my free website. My cost - $0.00. My result? Free traffic and a way to grab an email address at networking meetings.

It helps me stay connected with people I meet and I instantly become a friend and trusted source of information. If and when they have a need, maybe they will think of me. Even better, they can pass my book to a friend in need.

4. In the book, you talk about what you are passionate about and how you can help people.

It is free advertising and marketing for your particular topic. Not only can you use the book to demonstrate your knowledge, but you can also leave your contact information there. You never know who might read your information, and traffic comes from many sources. In my book, I reveal how I obtain high traffic and high search engine rankings for local businesses.

5. It is a natural fit for high search engine rankings. When people want information, they usually use a search engine like Google. You can use promotions of your book via press releases, Facebook, blog posts, and videos uploaded to You Tube, to boost traffic and search engine rankings. One way to create content for your blog is to take a tip or chapter from your book and post it.

6. I know I said only 5 reasons, but here is a 6th. When you speak to groups, you can generate a list of email addresses from people who want to hear from you by giving your book away. I was able to build a list of about 2000 people pretty quickly from many of my speaking events. I regularly connected with them via email about every 2 weeks with helpful information and advice. This generated new business and allowed me to keep my business in front of them for many months afterward.

In my next post, I will show you how easy it is to not only write a book, but to have it published.

Feel free to download my book to see how I did it . Click here now to join my free membership site and download the book for free.

Every business owner knows the value of a customer referring their friends and family. Customers who use your services have tremendous power over your success or failure, so catering to customers and making sure they have a great experience is very important.

The Internet has expanded this power, but many business owners don't fully comprehend the reach and instantaneous ability it represents.

The biggest change, in my opinion, has been how people begin searching online for solutions to problems. Often, many searches for local business begin with Google before a customer calls. Using their laptop while at Panera, or using their Droid phone, they type their want, need, or problem and Google shows them how to solve it.

A mistake business owners make is believing customers are typing in their business name to find them, when in fact, they often type a service (ie accountant) plus a locality (centerville, bellbrook, etc).

Google delivers many results, but often rewards businesses who play by their rules. What are their rules? Content.

When you realize this, it should change how you market your business. Yes, your current customers can and will spread the word about the services you provide by word of mouth, but also via Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites.

So, what are the three ways you can use the internet as a referral source? I will answer this with a simple example. Let's pretend you have a photography business specializing in baby pictures.

The search terms or keywords a local prospect might type in are "baby pictures in Centerville," or "baby photographer in Centerville."

A great way to help your business expand it's presence is by doing this:

Go to Animoto video. Upload a few of your client's pictures and be sure to include the name of your website at the end. Easily throw some music in the video and save it.

Copy the link and

A: Post it to your Facebook account and title it...Baby Photographs in My Centerville Photography Studeo.

B. Upload it to You Tube and include your link in the description box and write a coherent sentence about baby photogrpahy in Centerville (leave your phone number there too).

C. Send a link to your client via email and tell her she is welcome to email the video to all her friends and relatives.

You have just placed content into the search engines, linked back to your site, and provided an easy way for your happy client to spread the word about you.

Your objection at this point may be: That works great for photographers, but I'm a (enter your profession here).

This can be used for any profession. Let's say your business receives a lot of questions about something specific you do. This is a great chance to place the answer on video and put in on your blog, Facebook page, and email it to your current clients.

The thing here is you want to be seen as helpful and not sales or pushy. Everybody is sick of being marketed to, but they do appreciate helpful advice. Google and search engines reward this kind of sharing by sending new people to visit your video, blog post or Facebook entry.

Do you like this idea? I have 40 more in my new book I am giving away for free. Take a free membership and I will give you the links to learn more ways to market your business.

I have had the opportunity to talk to many local business owners, and have learned some very interesting views on what they believe internet marketing really is.

Some local owners believe internet marketing is:

Buying Yellow Page ads online

Buying a super expensive website that nobody visits

Telling everyone to "Like" their Facebook fan page

Sending emails shouting "SALE!"

Tweeting about what is going on in their store

While all these methods have to do with the internet, each misses a very valuable point regarding what the internet really offers.

Local businesses are applying offline methods to their online marketing and are discovering it isn't working.

In the past, local businesses could buy time, advertise on TV and radio (mass marketing), and watch the customers come into the store.

That is no longer happening. As advertising costs increase, my clients have noticed they are seeing less in the way of new customers. Not only are Americans watching less TV and listening to more satellite radio, they are ignoring marketing messages that don't apply to them.

Now, when they want to know something or figure out a problem, they seek the information online. Picking up their cellphone, billions are instantly finding information they need and calling those people in their area who can help them.

When they search, will they find you? The answer: it depends.

Consider this:

Have you written articles that have your local keywords sprinkled throughout?

Do you write on a blog regulary on topics you can address and help clients solve problems with?

When people search online, are there educational videos produced by you so that search engines can direct your prospects to your website or store?

Do you email your past clients or customers with helpful information that you have produced on your blog?

What am I talking about? Distribution!

Here are the three reasons local businesses should bother with local internet marketing:

The marketing channels have become free or nearly free, and no longer controlled by local television or radio stations, or books that happen to be yellow. More and more are "tuning in" online, spending time on Facebook, watching You Tube videos, and using text messaging to communicate (consider that there are 4.6 billion mobile phones worldwide and texting is used more than calling). Will your customers or clients find you there?

The opportunity to build a loyal base of customers and stay connected (for pennies) is now available to you as a local business owner. You can build a tribe or small army and continually connect with them through email or texting...as long as it is helpful to their lives (NO SALE! MESSAGES). Instead, you should write about their problems and how you solve them. Send a very short email and let them know you posted a helpful article on your blog and include a link so they can read and comment on it.

You can do it yourself and save a ton of money on marketing. Once your blog is set up, learning how to create little videos is not hard to do. I have had local business owners say, "I want to use the internet, but I don't want to be part of the marketing." What? It is YOUR business, you must be part of the marketing. Afterall, your customers or clients come there because of you!

When you continually add content, in as little as 5-30 minutes a day, Google and other search engines reward you. You are given local expert status in no time at all, and you are seen as being helpful to your local searchers who have a problem they need solved.

No printing costs, very little to no money spent, and continuing contact with a loyal client base. What local business owner couldn't handle that?

I am giving away my new book for free "The Ultimate Local Marketing Makeover" to anyone who wants it. In this book I share 40 tips to help you turn around your marketing and use the internet to promote your business. All you need to do to get it is to sign up for my free local marketing website at LocalMarketingMakeover.com

It is true, most local business comes from referrals. Friends tell friends and the next thing you know your business is cranking out profits.

The problem is many local business owners don't understand how to get referrals from the internet. What am I talking about? Groupon? No, not Groupon, something much simpler.

Most business owners understand the cost of generating a new customer. Thousands of dollars are spent (and often wasted) on placing your message in front of multiple thousands of people via expensive Yellow Page ads, radio or television.

If someone actually responds to one of these ads, visits your store front or office, and maybe even buys something, most business owners FAIL to collect information or befriend their new customer.

The new customer walks out the door never to be seen or heard from again. This is money down the drain, and future payments never to be realized.

I don't know about you, but businesses that go out of their way to make me feel special, include me in their little tribe, and express an interest in getting to know me are businesses that I tend to re-visit, tell my friends about, and aim to help make successful.

Here are a few ideas to help build a loyal following (a tribe), connect more fully, and help your customer solve their problem.

First place you want to be seen:

Email In Box - Many business owners fail hugely here in two ways. First, if they have an email address, they send out obvious sales pitches, offers, and coupons. The business owner appears desparate and appears to only care about their customer's money. Big mistake! This is the fastest way to get blocked or ignored.

What if you instead sent helpful information, a video you found on You Tube that adds value to their life, or an article you wrote that will solve a pain or problem they have. There is a chance your email might be opened and read. At the end, you might tell them about a coupon you just posted on your site, but only in the post script. Avoid being a salesman, and instead be a friend. This builds loyalty, respect, and the view that you actually care about your client.

How do you get their email address? Ask them for it, and tell them you want to help them solve problems and save a lot of money. DO NOT say you want to send a newsletter. We all get to much email, so your email has to add value to their busy life.

Here is a free tip...do not use a template and include a long corporate looking deal. Write a simple 2 sentence email and direct them back to your blog (don't have a blog - get one!).

Here is an example,

Dear John,

I know you are busy, but I wanted to let you know how to avoid lower back pain while running. Here is a two minute video demonstrating this stretch. Click Here To Watch Video.

Take Care,

Joe from Endurance Sports

P.S. I just got a shipment of a new Brooks running shoe, it is pretty cool. Stop by and I will show it to you.

Second mistake: They collect the information, but fear they are bothering the customers. You are bothering them if you only send coupons. Become an indispensable educator and teacher, and you will have a customer for life.

Second place to be seen:

Facebook - let your customers into your private world and friend them in your primary account. Do not send them to your business page. That sucks. Nobody hangs out at corporate pages. I welcome all my site visitors to check me out on my primary Facebook page. I don't have anything to hide, and I would welcome the friendship. Oh, I also post all my blog postings on my personal page (on auto-pilot), so when I post, all my friends can see what I did. Some may even hit the Like button and share it with their friends. Get the picture? This is free word of mouth referral. I pay nothing and the information is spread to people I don't even know. Cool.

Here is how you do it. When you have contact, ask them if you can friend them on Facebook. Get their name do a search on Facebook and send a request. They can say no, but at least you expressed an interest. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I offer a free book, video course, and free membership at my site on the homepage of Local Marketing Makeover. The only way you can get the info is to become a free member, but I invite you to be part of my local marketing tribe. I am sure you have some great ideas that have worked, so let's build a community together that helps people.

Do me a favor? If you thought this was helpful, would you tweet this or post it on your Facebook page? Just hit the buttons below. Thanks
